Site history
Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives church is the former Benedictine abbey founded by the Countess Lesceline, the wife of William of Eu, Richard II Duke of Normandy's brother. Upon the death of her husband in 1011, the Countess transformed the castle into a monastery and the first abbey-church was built. Consecrated in 1067, before William, Duke of Normandy and the new King of England, it was one of the most remarkable monastic centres and among those providing the greatest number of servitors for the Norman states in England and in Southern Italy.
